The 2022 Fifa World Cup Stadiums

The 2022 Fifa World Cup Stadiums

March 8, 2023

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place in Qatar from the 20th of November to the 18th of December. Unlike previous FIFA World Cups, which are typically played in June and July, the 2022 World Cup will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world and will be played in November and December to avoid the intense Qatari summer heat.

A spectator's dream, all eight stadiums are within 21 miles of central Doha and will be linked by a metro and tram system, making it possible to watch more than one game on the same day. The country intends the stadiums to reflect the historical and cultural aspects of Qatar, and for the designs to embody legacy, comfort, accessibility, and sustainability.

Al Bayt Stadium - Al Khor City, 55km north of Doha (capacity 60,000)

Al Bayt Stadium

A truly unique venue, Al Bayt Stadium’s entire structure is covered by a giant tent, reminiscent of those historically used by nomadic peoples in the region. Serving as a nod to Qatar’s past, it also looks forward to the future. In keeping with Doha’s sustainability ethos, the top level of the stadium is portable and is intended to be donated to a developing nation after the World Cup.

Al Bayt Stadium will host five group stage matches, one of the round sixteen fixtures, one quarterfinals game and one of the two semifinals.

Lusail Stadium - Lusail City, 20km north of central Doha (capacity 80,000)

Lusail Stadium

The main venue for the 2022 World Cup is Lusail Stadium, one of the city’s main attractions. Surrounded by a moat, the exterior of the stadium represents the sails of a traditional dhow boat. Inside, the stadium has been designed to have the entire pitch shaded, with a cooling system to maintain ideal temperatures throughout.

Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium

Home to the beloved Al Rayyan SC soccer team, the new Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, like many of the other 2022 World Cup stadiums was built in a modular design with sustainability in mind. Though the stadium will house 40,000 seats for the tournament, many of those will later be removed and donated to other projects.

Boasting a sleek, almost futuristic design aesthetically, Al Janoub Stadium is one of the most impressive in the tournament. While visitors to the World Cup will enjoy the stadium for watching soccer during the World Cup, it also provides locals in the community with an impressive list of new amenities including a school, cycling and running tracks, gyms, and restaurants.

Opened in October 2021, the impressive new Al Thumama Stadium was designed to resemble a gahfiya, the traditional Arabian woven headwear worn by males. The stadium will seat 40,000 for World Cup matches, following the tournament 20,000 of those seats will be removed and donated to developing countries.

Located in Doha’s Education City area, the Education City Stadium which opened in June 2020 is just 13 kilometres from the heart of Doha. The stunning exterior of the stadium features a complex geometrical pattern that filters and reflects light, designed to represent a diamond in the desert.

Khalifa International Stadium - Aspire, 5km west of central Doha (capacity 40,000)

Khalifa International Stadium

Built-in 1976, Khalifa International Stadium is one of only two existing stadiums that will serve as a venue for the 2022 World Cup. The 40,000-seat stadium has undergone several improvements, most recently, an extensive renovation was completed in 2017 that included the addition of a state-of-the-art cooling system to ensure both spectators and players are comfortable for the World Cup matches.

Stadium 974 - Ras Bu Abboud, 10km east of central Doha (capacity 40,000)

Stadium 974

Formerly Ras Abu Aboud Stadium, Stadium 974, will be the first fully dismountable stadium to serve as a World Cup host venue. As an incredible example of sustainable infrastructure, the stadium has been constructed in a modular format which allows it to later be transported and reassembled in a different location or even converted into smaller structures. The number 974 represents Qatar’s international dialling code, as well as the number of shipping containers used in the construction of the stadium.
